This opportunity was extra special as it provided a chance to see how Second Harvest Food Bank partners with two other organizations we are proud to support, Grandma’s House of Hope & the OC Rescue Mission. Second harvest provides nutritious food to 250 partnering locations throughout Orange County, feeding over 400,000 food-insecure individuals every month. We harvested 10,000 lbs. of Watermelon, which will be on local tables within the week, and weeded the bell pepper fields to keep them healthy.

The former Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (2003-2010) has collaborated with Second Harvest to spearhead this first ever project of its kind. It is the largest food bank farm in the nation, at 45 acres, which yields up to 600,000 pounds of produce per month, and it’s not even a year old yet!

We were very excited to have some of our employee’s children join us on the farm that morning. It’s wonderful to get our young people out and experience the many ways they can help the community, and hopefully develop a hunger to do more (no pun intended)!

It was a delight to get our hands in the dirt with other community members and contribute to their mission to end hunger in Orange County.”
